Jason Davis dislikes to be labeled as New Age

Bassist and bandleader Jason Davis reportedly said over phone that he is aware of the potential pitfalls of composing environmental sounds with Jazz and Latin rhythms.

He says “What I’m really conscious of trying to avoid is the cheese factor…I don’t want this to be labeled New Age, light music. It’s an intense music in that it draws from the pure jazz tradition. It’s not watered-down music for meditation, not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

I can see Davis is more attached with the sounds of nature which is of course can be called New Age. But it’s the musical right of an artist to claim his creation in his own term.

While speaking about life in McGill University in Montreal, he said “It was a crisis, you could call it. I pulled out of school, and I spent a lot of time in the woods thinking about things.”

“There’s a certain aspect of being present in the world that’s harder to do today,” he added. “We’re not encouraged to be present to the sounds and sights around us. Not just in the wilderness – even just walking down Commonwealth Avenue – you can catch a rhythm of things, and hear things that are unique.”
