An Interview with Steven Halpern: The Father of Contemporary Healing Music
Steven Halpern is an award wining international composer, producer and recording artist who established a new genre New Age healing music in 1975. His experiments in music lead him to discover some highly pure music therapy notes that can be used for relaxation, stress management, yoga, meditation, psychological counseling, massage, and other therapeutic bodywork. Halpern is often acclaimed as the father of contemporary healing music. His debut album Chakra Suite (released in 1975) sold over 700,000 copied until now. His new genre in contemporary instrumental music has expanded largely since then with the contribution of musicians around the world.
Recently I read an interview of Steven Halpern by Diana deRegnier. When asked what influenced him to composer in this genre, Steven Halpern gave a nice history of his influences which made me know more about his background and music. What took me to read through the Interview is the gorgeous title “New Age Music Grows Up”. Many thanks for Diana deRegnier for throwing us a great interview with Steven Halpern. “What I saw when I brought my first album into stores was that there was an audience looking for music that nurtured body, mind, spirit that wasn’t just looking for music for entertainment. My initial album that dealt with balancing the chakras as a very profound yet simple psycho-technology for enhancing coherence, getting people into an alpha brainwave state and really assisting bodies in healing themselves, kicked off the entire field that became known as New Age, and the sub-genre has always been healing music.”
