This Bavaria born sitarist Al Gromer Khan recently added a new album in his discography. On April 25th Al Gromer Khan’s New album Negus has been released following his previous album Indian Music II – Tea Time Ragas which hit themarket on January 01, 2008. Artist khan derived his inspiration for music and his musical instrument sitar from master sitarist Imrat Khan, Gromer and Vilayat Khan. Fans can purchase Al Gromer Khan’s Negus in his site, hope I don’t find the album in other online shopping sites.

Khan says in his official site about his new album NEGUS , “The title NEGUS started as a tongue-in-cheek idea: Aid for the spiritually developing countries of the white man. I want this music to honour three principles: African culture, the sovereign and that of translating traditional and popular music onto a plane sublime. The latter has been my endeavour during the last thirty years: through a kind of abstraction and reducing the entertaining aspects, a more profound satisfaction in music should be achieved, similar to what Wassily Kandinsky did in visual arts a hundred years previously. I gathered that if I could draw bliss from this type of music there is bound to be others in a global context experiencing similarely.”

We know Al Gromer Khan music has got some mysterious spell that binds the listener to his deep and river-like flowing music. Actually Khan’s Kamasutra can better be called a Prayer of the Indian Sex Ritual. I recommend this album for “those intimate times” and for couple meditation. In my last post on Turya, I quoted Osho’s talks on “Turya” (in the scope of its linguistic meaning). But what’s the music like? I’d say it’s like a pleasing whisper. Because with my sound system set to its highest volume, I still hear it as normal. And the beauty of the lies in this nature of the album: if you have ears, you can listen! Some tracks have the ambience of ‘space’ in them but not with any bangs as with any other space music. The album has 7 tracks in total with titles as meditative as the music.

My short comment on this album for now is: Turiya is a Voyage Beyond. That says all about this wondeful music album for meditation. Now the meaning of Turya, given by Osho:

Yes, nothing can be different than it is,

The Album contains 10 tracks, all of which are slow paced. There is no element of ‘hurry’ness in it, rather Gromer brings in a timelessness. This is one perfect album for, “meditation and PERFECT for those intimate times”, as one listener puts it. Or still better, direct to the point as another listener at Amazon says “mystical, sensual, flowing support for ecstatic lovemaking.

Mido, if you are looking for a sensual music, I’d suggest Tantra Drums with no second thought. Yet, if you want sample a track before you buy the complete album, you can listen to Take this Ruby track of this album.

The three main phrases here “without enforcing”, “ignorable”, “interesting” are what can be best described of Al Gromer Khan’s. His music doesn’t ‘force’ the listener to listen (through strong beats or high pitch voices or metal sounds that fill up most mainstream music); it passes by as gently as the mildest breeze (not even wind!) : If you are sensitive enough, you feel it or else it goes ignored. But if you can tune yourself to feel this ‘mildest breeze’, then you will be no more the same person you were: You’ve moved into deeper into your being.

Gromer’s insight into music is well established in his writings on music. I’ve been listening to his music albums for almost four years now (with large intervals) and I see myself just a newbie listener of Ambient genre. I feel Gromer’s music ‘interesting’, penetrating, ‘ignorable’ (am still a newbie, I said) and challenging. After all these years, listening to his music, very lately, I feel the breeze of his Tantra Drums, a wonderful music album to start wit, if you are newbie to this genre like me.

In weeks or months to come, I’ll be writing on this artist. But largely I wonder, if something can be written in albums which can be ‘ignored’? If I write, will my writing be ‘without enforcing’, ‘interesting’ and ‘ignorable’? Let’s see.
