Dear Readers, my friend Mohanraj Thangarasu is joining with me on this blog and am very happy to invite and introduce him to my readers. Mohanraj and I are friends since childhood sharing a common music interest for more than 10 years. He is graduate in English literature doing his post-graduation in the same.

A quick intro of his music interest and his taste of language is already seen in his first post on hang. And as far as the other interesting bits about him, physically, he occupies much space on a seat than I (like the bulldog on the right) , very handsome (some of my other friends name him Surya, the famous cine star of Tamil industry) and intellectually, he is an admirer of all arts — poetry of words, colors or crafts. This is all, indeed, no “stage speech”, he deserves them all, especially the space thing!!.

Mohanraj and I started our music journey when we both joined school band group, he playing a trumpet and I playing a clarinet. Prem Joshua, Karunesh, Pandit Hariprasad,Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Bhaskar Chandavarkar are a few of the many musicians we talked about and listened to on many a sleepless nights. I’m very happy to have him here with me sharing his music experience. I’ m sure you will like him more, both as a wonderful personality with very good comic sense and as a music critic.

Background Note: Father’s Day originated in Spokane, Washington, when a woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. William Jackson Smart, Sonora’s father, was a Civil War veteran and raised all his six children by himself after his wife died when giving birth to the sixth child.

Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. A courageous, selfless, and loving man, Sonora’s father made many parental sacrifices to raise his children. Sonora’s father was born in June, so Sonora chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration on June 19, 1910.

In 1972, President Richard Nixon officially designated the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.

The relationship of music to QOL and healing

Our QOL varies from moment to moment along a continuum that extends from suffering and anguish at one extreme to a sense of integrity and wholeness at the other. Healing involves a response shift toward the latter. What enables an experience of healing such as Anne’s? Wisdom traditions, depth psychology, and recent research suggest several factors. Healing occurs when we are drawn into the present moment and away from the ruminations about past and future that consistently dominate our lives. It requires a letting go of literal, rational, linear patterns of thought and an acceptance of an intuitive, imaginal, metaphoric way of experiencing reality (expressed in some traditions as a shift from head to heart). It is associated with a sense of enriched personal meaning and a sense of connectedness. We may experience these healing connections at four levels: at an inner level, between ego and “Self”/”Deep Centre”/the essential self (the “individuation” of Carl Jung); secondly, healing connections with others, in community (the I/thou relating of Martin Buber); thirdly, connectedness to the phenomenal world, as perceived through our senses — for example, in response to music, nature, long distance running, the creative arts; finally, through a sense of connection to ultimate meaning/God/”the More,” however that is perceived by the individual.

Music, when it is truly healing, may be acting through any or all of these four paths to cut through our carefully constructed defences, thus liberating a deeper appreciation and acceptance of mystery and the potential for healing that lies within. Newtonian physics told us that at base we are particulate; quantum physics, that we are vibratory. It seems that the reality is that we are not either/or, but both/and. Perhaps, in its vibratory nature, music opens us to a greater appreciation of our essential connectedness to the cosmos, our oneness with all that is.

When it comes to the power of flute, there is none to rival Pandit Hariprasad. He is well known as the maestro of flute and Indian classical music. Panditji is celebrating his 70th Birthday on July 1st and his fans and students have started wishing him a month ahead.

Apart from the divine music he plays, what I like very much about him is his perception of music and the value he gives to music. These are best explained by his own words.

My Practice is my pooja. My Sargam and scales are my mantra. Power of God is what I try to convey through my music.

I regularly read books of Osho and found this interesting passage on anger. I’m sharing this with you hoping it might help someone. After all who is not angry?

Anger is natural, because you have not created it; you are born with it, endowed by nature. And nature must have some use for it, otherwise it cannot be given to you. But the society is against it; it says suppress it. And when you suppress anger, many more things are suppressed by it, because everything is interrelated in your inner being. You cannot suppress one thing; you cannot express one thing. You express one, millions are expressed; you suppress one, millions are suppressed…

Anger is just a mental vomit. Something is wrong that you have taken in and your whole psychic being wants to throw it out, but there is no need to throw it out on somebody. Because people throw it on others, society tells them to control it.

There is no need to throw anger on anybody. You can go to your bathroom, you can go on a long walk — it means that something is inside that needs fast activity so that it is released. Just do a little jogging and you will feel it is released, or take a pillow and beat the pillow, fight with the pillow, and bite the pillow until your hands and teeth are relaxed. Within a five-minute catharsis you will feel unburdened, and once you know this you will never throw it on anybody, because that is absolutely foolish.

As all my midos knew, I often engage myself listening to new age albums or else will be hunting for new CD online. To give something unique and special treat to my ears, I was googling for new albums with couple of dollars from my paypal account. I won’t bother burning my pockets if the album is worth throwing some light on new musical experience.

Without any serious search I found Sayama’s Harmony in my wish list. What took me so much to the album is the title “Harmony”. I neither knew artist Sayama nor listened to her music. Sheer strange interesting in this peaceful music album made me to click “Add to shopping cart” button. I am in the half way to review this album for I continue to listen the seven tracks until now.

Gandharva music is the expression of the eternal music of Nature. It is the music that is in alliance with Natural Law. If you can hear the music of Nature as the sun rises, as it shines in the fullness of the midday, as the soft shadows of late afternoon spread across the land, if you can hear the sun set, the deep silence of midnight, the stillness of early morning and the first awakening of the dawn, these are the melodies and rhythms of gandharva music. They match perfectly with the cycles of Nature and the changing rhythms of Nature that govern the evolution of all levels of creation, from the minute to the ever-expanding universe.

It is the rhythms and melodies of Nature which were cognized by Vedic sages or rishis thousands of years ago and were put into sound. Gandharva music has its source in the timeless Vedic Tradition of India. It is the classical music of the ancient Vedic Civilization which enjoyed Heaven on Earth.

According to these ancient sages or rishis and at present Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, properly performing these melodies or ragas at the proper times of the day and night neutralizes stress in the atmosphere and creates a harmonizing and balancing influence for the individual and peace for the world family.
