Music Cures Patients in OSU Medical Center
From ancient days music has been a remedy for broken hearts, tiresome minds, and for any emotion & state of mind for that matters. Unfortunately many of us in the modern age are unaware of mystical qualities of music. But now science and technology started to give heed to this school of thoughts.
The James Cancer Hospital at the Ohio State University Medical Center encourages its patients to undergo a musical program: MusicCare, which supplies soothing music to cancer patients either by live musicians or by CD player or headphones. New age music, jazz, country and soothing classical music are played with the help of local instrumentalists and musicians from the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and also by couple of volunteers.
Pat Schmitt, the MusicCare Program director, said “A special aspect of the MusicCare program is that it allows us to bring something into a patient’s life that is pleasant, healing and normal”
“We are fortunate to have the talent of many musicians who donate their time during a challenging period in people’s lives…The music helps patients forget about their situation and provides a calming, therapeutic benefit.”
“Music can provide pleasant memories of surroundings where we live, where we have celebrated major events, where we worship or where we had our first date,” Schmitt said. “Music is personal and connects us with our lives.”
