The Elements: Musical approach to the existence

by shankar on July 9th, 2007

earth.giffire.gifspace.gifwater.gifwind.gifThis time I’m interested in writing about a series of music album The Elements: Wind, Fire, Space, Earth, Water.

India, China, Japan and most other Eastern countries have their own myth about these elements. In Indian mythology, these elements have a very special place: each represented by a god. If you haven’t heard the delicate music of these elements, probably listening to this music series should fix up the missing element in your ear ;-) . If you bet you already enjoy the elements, this series would definitely give you extra bonuses . Into the music now!

Released by Music Today, these five albums are composed by five great artists of India. Vanraj Bhatia, Bhaskar Chandavarkar, Shivkumar Sharma, Hariprasad chaurasia, Zakir Hussain. If these names strike you no familiarity, dont be baffled, Mido, I am here to make them familiar. Listing out these elements in order of my liking, Bhaskar Chandavarkar and Zakir Hussain compete for the first position. They both indeed are creative genius in their expression in music and leave me no choice to rank between them.

fire.gifChandavarkar’s Fire satisfies various appetite: you can find danceable as well as serene meditative music and everything that ranges between these two poles. The album features ten tracks with a couple of vedic chanting to the God of Fire: Agni.

space.gifZakir Hussain, renowned Tabla player, very beautifully explores Space. Indeed it is one of the most difficult element of the five to find an expression. Space features just four tracks but very lengthy ones. If you ever wondered does Zakir Hussain deserves all the Credit he gets, this album is an answer. Mido, I am to deal this album in a separate post for the very reason, it explores the music of silence through music. Paradoxical isn’t it?

wind.gifNext in line comes Hariprasad Chaurasia, bansari flute player. It is not difficult to corelate flute with wind and that way Chaurasia faces less difficulty. But even then his creativity can nevertheless be underrated. Wind is one of my favorite albums of Chaurasia next to Rivers, another debut album of Chaurasia.

water.gifWater by Shivkumar Sharma is feast in Santoor. This person has given new meaning to the folk instrument of Kashmir Valley and to the Hindustani Classical Music alike.

earth.gifLast comes Vanraj Bhatia, a famous musician from the Mumbai region. His Earth, I can say, is a kind of experiment which doesn’t fully find an expression of the element Earth. What he has composed is quite good to listen but how does it represent element Earth is a question unanswered. Vanraj Bhatia, however, deserves a reasonable sympathy. Element Earth is both musicless and silenceless; it is difficult to associate earth to any sound, noise, music, or silence. [Space for that matter can be argued in association with silence.]

Have feast with elements ;-)
